Interstem
(Minimum order 10 per variety per grade and quantities of 10 thereafter)

What is an interstem? An interstem is a piece of stem grafted between the rootsotck and variety. Interstems are used for two main reasons:
1. To control the growth of the cultivated variety
2. To provide a piece of stem that produces callus material that forms functional vascular connections between a rootstock and scion that would be otherwise incompatible.

Please see diagram below with the exploded view. Usual nursery culture is to grow the rootstock in the ground for a season and then graft the scion and interstem immediately prior to grafting on the rootstock in the ground or use a modified T bud of the interstem and variety.

Budagovski 9 (B9) Using a B9 as an interstem on a more vigorous rootstock will produce a tree around 10% above the vigor of a tree grafted straight on a rootstock of the interstem variety. i.e. 10% more than B9
Price: $4.40 for a 200mm piece approximately pencil thickness, please advise if scions to grafted are larger than this.

M9 Using a M9 as an interstem on a more vigorous rootstock will produce a tree around10% above the vigor of a tree grafted straight on a rootstock of the interstem variety, i.e. 10% more than M9
Price: $4.40 for a 200mm piece approximately pencil thickness, please advise if scions to grafted are larger than this.

M26 Using a M26 as an interstem on a more vigorous rootstock will produce a tree around 10% above the vigor of a tree grafted straight on a rootstock of the interstem variety, i.e. 10% more than M26.
Price: $4.40 for a 200mm piece approximately pencil thickness, please advise if scions to grafted are larger than this.

Beure Hardy Many pear varieties require a compatibility aid to grow on Quince A, B, or C. Beure Hardy is the most widely used variety for this.
Price: $4.40 for a 200mm piece approximately pencil thickness, please advise if scions to grafted are larger than this.

Grafting Supplies

Grafting Tape
We offer embossed polythene grafting tape in 3 widths: 12mm, 19mm and 25mm. The rolls are 50m in length and will be enough to tie approximately 150 grafts.  The embossed tape is much easier to handle and tie than non embossed tapes. It holds the graft/bud firmly until it has healed.  It is easliy removed once graft is healed by cutting the half hitch knot and untying or simply running a sharp blade down the length of the tape.  The wider tapes 19mm and 25mm are ideal for tying in grafts where the rootstock is quite a bit larger than the scion, such as when reworking existing orchard trees.

Price:
12mm wide: $4.40
19mm wide: $5.50
25mm wide: $6.60

Sealing Paint
All graft should have their tops sealed to prevent the scion from drying out.  This will greatly improve grafting success. The sealing paint can be used on top of grafts or wherever tape doesn't seal the graft union.  Please note: Paint brushes will wash out in water if still wet,  however paint can NOT be removed with any solvent once dry.

Price:
300mL container: $22

Grafting Knife
We offer hook style grafting knives.  These are sharpened so there is one bevelled side and one flat side.  This makes grafting much easier. Please specify if you are right or left handed when ordering as this will determine the side we need to place the bevel.

Price:
One size left or right handed: $77

Sample Graft
If you are a novice grafter and not sure what to aim for when grafting; we can supply a sample graft in your rootstock order which you can take apart and examine. We will also tape it so you get an idea of how this is done.
