Fruit ripening time: March
A sweet, but mild flavour. Best enjoyed when picked in their prime.
Sadly, the overripe Red Delicious has earned this apple a bad name. The flesh has a light crispness and is juicy when perfectly ripe, but has a relatively short storage life for enjoying these apples in their prime.
A medium sized apple with a characteristic tall, conical shape, often described as blocky. The dark red, glossy skin colour gives this apple its fame. For this reason, is the parent of a number of newer apple varieties; all chasing that appealing red colour, with an improved flavour. The flesh is white.
A tree with high vigour, and a reliably good crop. A high chill variety.
Uses: Fresh eating and good in salads. Although these apples will keep for a long time in the refrigerator, they will not keep their crispness for long and will become woolly.
Pollinators: Akané, Braeburn, Browns Apple, Cleopatra, Cripps Pink, Cox’s Orange Pippin, Democrat, Esopus Spitzenburg, Five Crown Pippin, Fuji, Five Crown Pippin, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Jonathan, Kingston Black, Northern Spy, Pine Gold Pippin, Splendour, Tydeman's Early Worcester, Worcester Pearmain, Yarlington Mill and white flowering Crabapples.
